RETURN TO CONSTRUCTION

Construction Volunteer Notes:

  • An individual may go to any active site.  We ask that you be at the site ready to work at 8:00.  If you need to leave early that is OK, but those wishing to volunteer and work as a group must make prior arrangements with our volunteer-group coordinator (call our office on 727-536-4755,or send an e-mail).
  • For participation in all construction activities, a volunteer must be at least 18 years of age; 16 and 17 year-olds are excluded from any demolition work, working on roofs and scaffolding, excavation, ladder work, and power tool use. Those who are 14 or 15 years old may help with non-construction tasks such as painting and landscaping after construction is complete, and children under the age of 14 are not permitted on a construction site.
  • All volunteers must fill out and sign a Volunteer Response Form ; forms are available at the work sites for first-time workers, or may be obtained from the PHfH office. Everyone who shows up at a work site is also asked to sign-in on a work sheet that helps us account for the labor invested in that particular house.
  • Clothing should be sensible for work: sturdy shoes (work boots or heavy-soled shoes with closed toes and closed heels), sunscreen, perhaps a hat and/or work gloves.  If the work activity is painting or drywall finishing, old clothes are essential!
  • Water and a portable toilet are provided at each site.  There is usually a short break in mid-morning, so bringing a small snack is a good idea. There will be a lunch break, for which each person should bring their own food, or drive from the worksite to a local restaurant.  (Sometimes, on a special occasion, some organization may provide hospitality; this page will note when that occurs.)
  • Basic and specialized tools are provided. If anyone wishes, they may bring their own tools, but they must be responsible for them. Marking them is a good idea.
  • Prior construction experience and skills are welcome but not required: there are always non-skilled tasks to be performed, and our Site Supervisors' responsibilities include teaching volunteers how we do things.

From top to bottom and side to side, Pinellas Habitat for Humanity, like its parent, Habitat for Humanity International, is a volunteer operation! You, your friends, and others like you can join us in our mission to eliminate poverty housing -- particularly here in Pinellas County.

Most notably, and as you have heard, read about, and seen on TV, you can help us build a house for a struggling family. Barn raising in urban America! President Jimmy Carter was an early, and is a continuing, role model in this form of community teamwork, and, recently, President George W. Bush has lent his hammer to construction in nearby Tampa.  For more information about Habitat's beginnings both here and in Pinellas County, you are welcome to join us for a Habitat orientation class (called Nuts 'N Bolts).  Click here for the schedule.

Come and work with us on Wednesdays or Saturdays.  You don't need any special skills - we will teach you what you need to know for the day!  You must print out and have on file, a Volunteer Response Form , that also asks for your name, address, and emergency contact information before you volunteer.  You can give a completed form to the supervisor on the day that you start to work.  (This form is in Acrobat Reader format.  If you do not have Acrobat Reader on your system, you can download it here for free.)  Please keep track of your volunteer hours by filling out our quarterly time sheet and sending it into our office.

Many people mobilize their favorite group (church, singles, corporation, civic group) to build not just homes but camaraderie between the employees/membership.  Hammering together is a wonderful way to bring a spirit of community to your organization.  For tips on how to organize a group and arrange for them to work together, click here.

But of course there is much more to sustaining an effort like ours than the physical labor of construction!  We need volunteer support, both casual & transient and long-term & committed, in many forms.  You may be able to help us in any number of ways:

  • Occasional teams are needed for bulk mailing preparation and other office operations.

  • Experienced construction leaders are needed as "Site Supervisors".

  • Fund-raisers are needed.

  • Committees must be staffed:

    • Site Selection needs real estate help.

    • Family Selection needs individuals who can research and evaluate applications and interview applicants.

    • Family Support needs "big brothers and sisters" to help homeowners deal with their new responsibilities.

    • Community Events needs individuals to staff events, like home shows, parades, grand openings, and hand-out brochures, newsletters and educate people about Habitat for Humanity.

    • Special Events needs individuals to assist our staff at events, such as our Annual Building Dreams Auction, home dedication ceremonies, etc.

If you are to any degree inspired or intrigued by our mission and activity, join us!  Drop by, as we invited you to do above, give us a call on 727-536-4755 x208 or drop us a note via e-mail
